Where Are You in the Haunting Cycle?

People experiencing hauntings go through a cycle of five distinct phases. How fast they cycle through the phases depends on the frequency and severity of the phenomena. The phases are as follows:

1 – DENIAL

This phase is your gut reaction to what you are starting to experience. You deny that it is happening and shrug it off as “just your imagination.” You assure yourself that ghosts don’t exist. That there must be a logical explanation for it or that perhaps someone is playing tricks on you. Maybe you begin to think that you may be starting to go crazy. You have a strong feeling of “this can’t be happening to me.”

2 – ADMISSION

In this phase, a realization sets-in and you go into a sort of state of shock. There is definitely something paranormal going on that you don’t understand. You hope that this will all go away soon by itself, perhaps just as suddenly as it began. You think of sharing what you are going through with someone, but you don’t do it, fearing that you will be laughed at or ostracized.

3 – QUESTIONING

In this phase, you continue to experience phenomena and start to think of what the future may bring. Fear of the unknown sets in, and as you think more about what’s happening, the fear begins to spiral out of control.

You start to ask why this is happening and why it’s happening to you. You begin to wonder if it will ever stop. Is it going to worsen or get really bad? Can the entities involved hurt us? Can this follow me to work? Is it human or is it demonic?

4 – RISK ASSESSMENT

The continued phenomena and living with escalating fear drive you to consider taking action. But you worry that acting may make things worse, not better. You consider actions that you can do such as saging or sprinkling with Holy Water. You start to think about having someone investigate. Perhaps you begin to discuss your situation with close relatives and friends you can trust to keep things confidential.

5 – DETERMINATION TO ACT

Things have gone on long enough or have gotten severe enough that you accept the fact that you need outside help and that you need that help now, regardless of risk. This is the phase in which people usually contact us.

So where in this cycle are you now? Just know that in all the years that we have been investigating, we have never made things worse.
